OEX Phoxx 2 V2 Tent Review: A Budget-Friendly Wild Camping Essential
First Impressions and Why I Bought It
This is going to be my review of the OEX Phoxx 2 V2. Straight off the bat, it’s a perfect starter tent. I picked this up during a Black Friday event at Go Outdoors for just under £70.
Originally, I didn’t go in for this tent specifically, but I knew I wanted something from OEX. After looking at the options, the Bobcat and the Phoxx 2 V2 stood out. Given the minimal size difference when packed and the additional space it offers, the Phoxx 2 V2 made the most sense.
I've now used this tent three times and decided it deserves a proper review.
What You Get in the Bag
The tent packs down small, slightly larger than the Bobcat, and weighs around 2kg. It’s not ultralight, but it’s definitely light for the interior space you get. Here’s what comes in the bag:
Oversized ripstop waterproof tent bag
Tent inner and fly
18 high-quality, lightweight tent pegs
Two poles (one gold, one silver bend for easy identification)
A Closer Look at the Pegs and Poles
Tent Pegs: Lightweight yet sturdy, even when hammered in with the back of an axe.
Tent Poles: Aluminium with elastic cord, clearly marked ends for foot and head ends.
Setup: Simple and Fast
Peg Out the Inner
Roll out the tent, identify the head and foot ends, and peg out the four corners of the inner.
Insert the Poles
Silver bend pole for the foot end
Gold bend pole for the head end
Each pole slides into adjustable and fixed clips. Tensioning is easy with the adjustable buckle.
Clip and Peg the Fly
Align seams with pole positions
Use buckles and bungee corners to attach and tension the fly
Peg out both vestibules and guy lines for ventilation
Interior Features and Comfort
Inside, the tent has:
Two pockets at the head end
Mesh ventilation panels at both ends
A double-door system (great for alternate views and airflow)
Enough space for someone 5'11" to lay comfortably with room for gear
One annoyance is the lamp hook placement—it’s right where your head rests when sitting up.
Bonus Hack: Using a Tarp for Extra Space
If you're camping for more than one night or expect bad weather, consider bringing a tarp. I used a DD 3.5 x 3.5m tarp:
Provides a large sheltered area
Protects the tent and lets you pack it away dry
Allows cooking and admin tasks outside
How I Set It Up:
Pegged out back corners and center of tarp
Used trekking poles and paracord for front support
Used spare stick as a third support point
This setup created a spacious, protected area perfect for extended stays.
Performance in Real Conditions
Over three trips:
Two were in heavy rain — stayed completely dry
One night dropped to 2°C — with the right sleep system, very comfortable
Stealth and Suitability
Colour is perfect for wild camping
Low profile design makes it easy to stay under the radar
Very little mesh compared to other tents, keeping heat in during colder nights
Final Thoughts and Recommendation
For under £70, the OEX Phoxx 2 V2 is incredible value. It's spacious for one person, weatherproof, easy to set up, and durable.
If you’re starting out with wild camping, or want a reliable backup tent, this one’s for you.
Quick Summary:
Weight: Approx. 2kg
Packed Size: Compact
Setup Time: Quick (5-10 minutes)
Comfort: High for a solo tent
Weather Resistance: Excellent
